The technologies developed by AIM-HI will be applied to practical manufacturing systems through industry-university cooperation initiatives. Using research institution partners and industrial partners as entry points, AIM-HI will actively assist industry in upgrading its manufacturing technologies and improving its performance as a result. In fact, close involvement with industry can be an effective means to become a top research institute. A good role model is RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Aachen University is best known for its achievements in fundamental industry technology through close industry-university cooperation. AIM-HI has a long history of collaboration with local industries. With the funding of this project, we will be able to systematically expand this relationship in both breadth and depth by jointly developing advanced manufacturing technologies. Since the machine tools industry in Taiwan ranks 4th in the world, the problems and customer needs gathered from the field will be valuable assets to AIM-HI. These practical concerns and future industry needs will certainly constitute world-class research questions and bring international recognition to the institute. Furthermore, it is believed that the income derived from intellectual properties will provide the needed financial stability to ensure future self-sufficient operation of AIM-HI. In the following, concrete approaches to industry-university cooperation are described.
1. Industry-university joint projects. Transforming cutting-edge research into new technologies suitable for real-world, industrial implementation is a central mission of AIM-HI. With this goal in mind, AIM-HI will formalize a transformation process and will establish an annual prioritized list of items for potential industry-university cooperation projects. By conducting industry-university joint projects, AIM-HI will not only upgrade the technical capabilities of its industrial partners, but will also nurture highly-competent researchers capable of contributing to both academia and industry. In addition, such projects will enable AIM-HI to keep its finger on the pulse of both current and emerging trends in industry and in the wider market place.
2. Technology transfer. In addition to academic publications, AIM-HI will file patents for the advanced technologies it develops. These technologies will then be immediately transferred to AIM-HI industrial partners so that they can implement them earlier than their competitors and achieve a significant commercial benefit as a result.
3. Industrial liaison program. Research institutions and industrial companies will be invited to join the industrial liaison program established by AIM-HI. Through this program, AIM-HI will share its research results with a wider audience and will benefit from an exchange of ideas between like-minded research institutions and industrial companies. In addition, members of the program will be offered the opportunity to send engineers to AIM-HI in order to study advanced manufacturing technologies. Moreover, depending on the particular research or education needs, AIM-HI will send its own students to the member companies to gain hands-on practical experience.
4. Co-hosting conferences or training courses: In order to disseminate its major research findings throughout industry, AIM-HI will host domestic conferences, symposiums, and workshops (in conjunction with its research institution partners where appropriate). In addition, AIM-HI will offer training courses for top engineers from its collaborative partners in order to provide a systematic introduction and grounding in advanced manufacturing technologies
