Title:Group IV Photonics: Progress and Challenges
There has been an explosive growth of Group IV Photonics in the last decade or so. Several application areas, like data centers, high performance computing and sensing are likely to be revolutionalized with the development of Group IV Photonics. The key driving force behind Group IV (or alternatively Si) Photonics is the ability to use CMOS like fabrication resulting in high volume production at low cast, thus enabling Electronics-Photonics Integrated Circuits (EPICs).
In this talk the basic of communication technology behind communication and interconnects and the photonic devices and components will be described. Fundamental limitations of Group IV semiconductors and their alloys will be mentioned. Basic principles of Si based light sources, detectors and modulators, and current progress in realizing the devices will be discussed. The talk will end by briefly listing, the problems and challenges to meet desired functionalities.
