Title:Fusion Welding: fundamentals, welding metallurgy and a study case

Abstract:Fusion welding is a process where two pieces of metal can be joined together. The process involves melting and solidification of the surfaces being joint. In general, welding methods can be classified into (i) gas welding, (ii) arc welding, (iii) resistance welding, and (iv) high-energy welding. According to the American Welding Society (AWS), there are over fifty types of welding. The common ones including metal inert gas (MIG), and tungsten inert gas (TIG), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or stick welding submerged arc welding (SAW), plasma welding (PW), laser beam welding (LBW), etc. In this lecture, the fundamental of fusion welding and its metallurgy will be discussed. As a study case, welding of titanium alloys will be presented.
